Barbara has been practicing law in the St. Louis Metro East area for over 25 years, concentrating in the areas of family law, real estate law, criminal defense and general civil practice.

She completed both her undergraduate degree and Juris Doctorate at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. During law school, she clerked on the Court of Appeals in Eastern Missouri and worked at a personal injury law firm.

After graduating, she worked at the Law Firm of Lucco, Brown, and Mudge in Edwardsville, Illinois. Additionally, Barbara was the lead attorney in the Domestic Violence/Child Support Enforcement Unit of the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office for over 2 years.

Barbara opened her own practice in Edwardsville, Illinois in April, 1993. Her practice encompasses being in-house-counsel for Abstracts and Titles, a position she has held for almost 25 years.

Barb volunteers at several philanthropic organizations in the community, including being a member of the board of the Edwardsville Arts Center.

While Barbara projects a confident and assertive attitude in the courtroom, her instinctual approach in cases is to attempt a settlement. Her many years of experience have taught her that parties are infinitely happier if they make the decision about the resolution of a case themselves instead of having a Judge decide.



M. Caitlin Embrich, Associate Attorney

Caitlin Embrich is an associate attorney licensed to practice law in Illinois & Missouri.

Ms. Embrich graduated Magna Cum Laude from Saint Louis University in 2007, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. While attending SLU, Caitlin worked at Anheuser-Busch and Wachovia Securities and was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

Caitlin received her J.D. & MBA (cum laude) from Creighton University in 2010. During law school, she worked as an intern for the Federal Public Defender’s Office and the Douglas County, Nebraska Pretrial Release Program. In these positions, Caitlin worked with criminal offenders to obtain early release from incarceration and assisted offenders with work placement after release.

Following her admission to the Illinois bar, Caitlin worked as an associate attorney for The Law Offices of Susan Parnell Wilson in Belleville concentrating her practice on family law and estate work. Caitlin has represented clients in Madison, St. Clair, Monroe, Randolph and Clinton counties.

Caitlin currently represents clients in various areas of civil litigation, but she has concentrated much of her practice on family law issues, probate, will and power of attorney preparation, and evictions. Caitlin is also a Mediator in the State of Illinois.

Caitlin is married, and she lives with her husband and son and daughter in Swansea, Illinois. She is an active member of the Junior Service Club of St. Clair County and has served on the board of directors.


Sarah Sherer-Kohlburn, Associate Attorney 

Sarah Sherer-Kohlburn in an associate attorney, currently licensed to practice law in Illinois, Missouri and New York and in the Southern District of Illinois.

Ms. Sherer-Kohlburn graduated Summa Cum Laude from Washington University School of Law.  During law school she was a member of the National Moot Court team as well as the Managing Editor and an Editor in Chief of the Washington University Law Review.  Ms. Sherer-Kohlburn was a Dean’s Scholar and received the Judge Amandus Brackman Moot Court Award for appellate advocacy. During law school, Sarah worked as an intern in the Missouri State Public Defender’s Office and as a law clerk at a civil law firm in St. Louis, MO.

Sarah received her B.A.  from Barnard College of Columbia University, where she obtained a double major in Religion and Women’s Studies, graduating with a Thesis with Distinction.

Following law school, Sarah clerked for the Honorable Tucker L. Melancon in the Eastern District of New York.  She then worked as a litigation associate attorney at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton and Garrison in New York, practicing primarily civil litigation.  Prior to joining Sherer Law Offices, Sarah worked on behalf of defendants in criminal cases as an attorney at the St. Louis City Public Defender’s Office.  During this time, she tried more than a dozen jury cases.  Sarah currently focuses her practice on criminal defense work, representing clients at all stages of criminal proceedings.

Sarah enjoys being involved in her community. She is one of the coaches of the Washington University Moot Court team and is a member of a legal mentoring and development group, the Inns of Court.

Tara Barnett is an associate attorney, currently licensed to practice law in Illinois.

Tara graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Illinois Springfield in December 2013 with a degree in Communications and minors in Criminal Justice and Women and Gender Studies. While attending UIS, Tara was the President of Lamda Pi Eta, an honors communication organization.

Tara received her Juris Doctor from Saint Louis University School of Law.  During her time in law school, Tara actually began her legal career as a law clerk for Sherer Law Offices, and was actively involved as a student at SLU Law,  having served as an executive board member of Phi Delta Phi.

Tara lives with her husband in Columbia, Illinois.

Zachary Patterson, Associate Attorney

Zack is an associate attorney licensed to practice law in Illinois.

Zack received his J.D. from Southern Illinois University School of Law, graduating in the Spring of 2018. During his time in law school, Zack was awarded Dean’s List Honors as well as a CALI award for the top grade in State and Local Government.  He also served as the Secretary for SIU Law’s American Constitution Society.  Zack completed his undergraduate education at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with a degree in Political Science and a minor in Psychology.  While attending SIUE, Zack played hockey and served as Vice President of the SIUE Club Hockey Association.

While attending law school, Zack was an intern at the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office. At this office, he completed legal research and worked as a Rule 711 Intern, allowing him to appear in court and try multiple traffic and misdemeanor cases at bench trials, as well as second chair a felony jury trial. Zack began working for Sherer Law Offices as a law clerk while in law school.

Zack grew up in Edwardsville and currently resides in town.


Katie Koebbe, Managing Paralegal

Katie has been the lead paralegal and office manager for Barb since April 2009.

Katie graduated from Southwestern Illinois College with a degree in Paralegal Studies.

Katie assists in all phases of litigation, from inception through discovery and trial. She assists with document examination and management, drafting of pleadings, deposition preparation and trial preparation.

Beyond the office doors, Katie loves to spend time with her husband, son and daughter, family, and friends.



Erin Hischier, Paralegal

Erin joined Sherer Law Offices in March of 2017, and she is currently a full-time paralegal, working primarily on domestic relations cases and also probate, civil, and real estate work.

Erin graduated from Lewis & Clark with her degree in Paralegal Studies in 2017. Prior to joining Sherer Law Offices, Erin worked at Heyl, Royster, Voelker & Allen in Edwardsville as a docket clerk.  While she and her husband lived in Missouri, Erin also was the dedicated legal secretary for a partner/shareholder at a general litigation firm in Washington, MO, where Erin gained her initial experience in domestic relations litigation.

Erin grew up in Edwardsville, and she still currently resides in town with her husband, their dog Jersey, and their cat Sugar Bear.  Outside of work, Erin enjoys spending time with her family and taking Jersey to the dog park.


MaKenzie Biesk, Paralegal

MaKenzie joined Sherer Law Offices in May of 2018. She is a full-time paralegal, working primarily on domestic relations cases.

MaKenzie graduated from Southwestern Illinois College with her degree in Paralegal Studies in 2015. Prior to joining Sherer Law Offices, MaKenzie worked at Flint Law Firm, LLC in Edwardsville, Illinois as a Litigation Paralegal.

Outside of work, MaKenzie enjoys spending time with her family and friends.


Kathryn Skinner, Paralegal

Kathryn joined Sherer Law Offices in August of 2018. She is a full-time paralegal, working primarily on domestic relations cases.

Kathryn graduated from Yavapai College with her degree in Paralegal Studies in 2017.  Prior to joining Sherer Law Offices, Kathryn worked at Flint Law Firm in Edwardsville, IL as a Litigation Paralegal.

Kathryn grew up primarily in Northern Arizona and relocated to Edwardsville in 2017. When she is not at work, Kathryn enjoys hiking and taking her bike out on the trails.


Kristin Huff, Paralegal

Kristin joined Sherer Law Offices in November of 2018.  She is a full-time paralegal, working on domestic relations, criminal defense, and general civil matters.

Kristin graduated from Southwestern Illinois College with a degree in Paralegal Studies in May 2015. Prior to joining Sherer Law Offices, Kristin worked as a litigation paralegal at Hepler Broom in St. Louis, MO; Kurowski Shultz in O’Fallon, IL; and Stange Law Firm in Edwardsville, IL. She has experience working on personal injury and family law cases.

Kristin grew up in Granite City and now lives nearby in Glen Carbon.  She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, doing home improvement projects, and playing with her dog.


Jason Harms, Legal Assistant

Jason joined Sherer Law Offices in January of 2019. He is a full-time legal assistant and works primarily in reception, answering phones, and scheduling client appointments.

Jason graduated from University of Illinois at the Urbana/Champaign campus and has a degree in Psychology.  Prior to joining Sherer Law Offices, Jason worked in the areas of real estate and human resources.

Jason grew up in the Lebanon, IL area and recently relocated back home after spending many years in Chicago. When he is not at work, Jason enjoys spending time with his family and biking and hiking locally.
